He was small enough to hold in two hands, yet he carried a burden no little dog should ever have to bear. His name is Ace, and not long ago, the people who were supposed to love him decided he was no longer worth keeping. They simply let him go, as if he were something to be thrown away.
But Ace’s story didn’t end there. In fact, that was only the beginning.
When Ace arrived at his new foster home, it was clear right away that he had been through a great deal. His body told the story his voice could not. His skin was raw and irritated, his fur was thin and patchy, and he moved like a dog who had been hurting for a very long time.
The rescuers wasted no time. They brought him to see Dr. Alonso, a veterinarian who examined him carefully and estimated that Ace was only about two to three years old. Still so young. Still with so much life ahead of him, if only someone would give him the chance.
The examination revealed just how much this little guy had been quietly enduring.
Ace was suffering from a bad case of mange, a skin condition that causes intense itching and hair loss. On top of that, his blood tests came back positive for two tick-borne diseases, Ehrlichia and Anaplasma. These are serious infections that can leave a dog weak and unwell if they go untreated.
And as if that weren’t enough, the vet found foxtails lodged in one of his paws. Foxtails are sharp, barbed seed heads from wild grasses, and they can work their way into a dog’s skin, causing real pain with every step.
It’s hard to imagine how uncomfortable Ace must have been. Every scratch, every step, every moment of the day must have been a struggle.
Thankfully, Ace was no longer facing it alone.
With support from the Saving Huey Foundation, his rescuers started him right away on a strict course of antibiotics. Treating tick-borne illnesses takes patience and consistency, and Ace’s caregivers were committed to seeing it through, one dose at a time.
Now, anyone who has ever tried to give a dog medicine knows it isn’t always easy. But Ace surprised everyone. He took his medicine like a brave little soldier, especially once he discovered it came with chicken and cheese-flavored treats. Those tasty rewards quickly became a highlight of his day.
He also came to love his daily vitamins. And when it was time for his gentle, soothing massages, Ace simply melted. For a dog whose body had known so much discomfort, those quiet moments of tender touch must have meant the world.
Day by day, something beautiful began to happen.
As the medicine did its work and the pain started to fade, Ace began to change. The frightened, hurting dog who had arrived at the door slowly gave way to someone new. Or perhaps, someone who had been there all along, just waiting for a safe place to come out.
Once Ace realized he was truly safe, his real personality began to shine.
And what a personality it turned out to be!
Ace found his voice, and he wasn’t shy about using it. He became chatty and vocal, letting everyone know exactly how he felt. He grew playful, full of energy he simply hadn’t had before. And yes, he even turned out to be a little feisty.
The other rescue dogs in the home, including Woody and Scooby, quickly learned that this tiny newcomer had a big attitude. Ace wasn’t afraid to be a bit bossy, acting as if he were in charge of the whole household. For a dog who had once been cast aside, it was wonderful to see him standing tall and holding his own.
And his body was healing, too.
His recovery was nothing short of remarkable. The raw, irritated skin that had caused him so much misery began to heal. Then came the moment his caregivers had been hoping for: his fur started growing back. Soft, new hair began to cover the places that had once been bare and sore.
For the people who had watched him struggle, it was a joyful sight. Every new patch of fur was a small victory, a sign that Ace was truly on the mend.
Along the way, his foster family discovered something delightful about him. This little dog has a real love for fresh fruit!
They offered him a variety of healthy snacks to see what he liked. Carrots? Absolutely not. Ace wanted nothing to do with them and made his opinion perfectly clear. But apples were a different story, and he happily munched away. He also enjoyed jicama, watermelon, and papaya, savoring each one like a little connoisseur.
As this chapter of his story comes to a close, we find Ace exactly where he belongs. Sleepy and content, he snuggles in for the night, warm and comfortable, surrounded by people who care about him.
There’s no more itching to keep him awake. No more pain in his paw. No more wondering whether anyone will look after him.
For the first time in what may have been a very long time, Ace is simply allowed to rest.
His journey is a powerful reminder of what a little compassion can do. Someone once decided Ace wasn’t worth keeping. But a group of kind-hearted people saw him differently. They saw a young dog who deserved a second chance, and they gave him one.
Today, Ace is healing, growing stronger, and learning that the world can be a gentle place after all. He is finally experiencing the love and comfort he deserved all along.
If his story touched your heart, please remember that there are many more dogs like Ace out there, waiting for someone to notice them. Supporting local rescues, fostering, or simply sharing stories like this one can help another little soul find their way home.
Because every dog, no matter how small or how broken, deserves to be loved.
