This Girl Became a Successful Child Star after Bio Parents Gave Her up to Family Who Had ‘No Plans’ to Adopt

Melissa Gilbert’s life began with a complex mix of family dynamics and secrecy. Born at the now-closed French Hospital in Los Angeles on May 8, 1964, she was adopted just 24 hours later by Barbara Crane and Paul Gilbert. Her biological parents, both prioritizing their careers over child-rearing, chose adoption for her. They weren’t interested in raising a child, and her adoptive parents kept her background a secret for years. Barbara and Paul, both from the entertainment world, had one other adopted child, Jonathan. Barbara, in her twenties at the time, had pursued an acting career, while Paul was a multi-talented entertainer with roots as an aerialist with a family circus from Buenos Aires. Despite separating when Melissa was just six, Melissa remembered Paul warmly, describing him as a brilliant and loving man.

The story took a darker turn with Paul’s death in 1976, initially believed to be from a stroke. Only later would Melissa discover the truth about his passing and her adoption story. Melissa learned from her adoptive parents that her biological father, David Darlington, was a Rhodes Scholar, and her birth mother, Kathy Wood, was supposedly a prima ballerina. She also heard that her parents had to part with her due to a challenging work project during the time of her birth. However, as Melissa grew up, she discovered her birth mother was a dancer—not a prima ballerina—and her father was involved in stock car racing and painting signs.

In truth, Melissa’s biological parents had a complicated family situation; they each had children from previous marriages. When they reunited, they found themselves unable to support another child. Melissa was surprised to learn about her adoption journey years after her adoptive father’s passing. Her godmother, Mitzi, recalled the day the Gilberts unexpectedly brought Melissa home. She admitted, “Well, we weren’t planning on adopting a kid.” Barbara herself was candid about not intending to adopt at first, even referring to the newborn as “it” in early conversations with her husband. Over time, however, Barbara and Paul’s hearts opened up, and they welcomed Melissa fully.

In July 2020, Melissa opened up publicly about the many layers of her family’s secrets. She’d grown up thinking her father had passed away from a stroke but learned at 45 that he had died by suicide. The weight of that secret had silently shaped her, and she recognized how damaging such hidden truths could be for families. Determined to learn more, she hired a detective who found that her father, a WWII veteran, had expressed suicidal thoughts due to chronic pain and mental anguish.

The revelations about her father’s passing deeply affected Melissa for months. She grappled with profound grief, losing sleep and appetite while processing this painful truth. Eventually, though, she found a way to honor his memory, turning her pain into purpose by advocating for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Through this process, she also came to forgive Barbara for keeping such heavy secrets.

As Melissa reflected on her past, she emerged with a greater understanding of herself and her journey. She shared her experiences in her memoir, Back to the Prairie, released in July 2022. Known to millions as Laura “Half-Pint” Ingalls Wilder on the beloved television series Little House on the Prairie, Melissa continues to engage with her family and finds joy in her role as a grandmother. In 2013, Melissa married Timothy Busfield, her third husband, in a private ceremony in Santa Barbara, California. The two now enjoy a tranquil life in a 14-acre cottage in New York’s Catskill Mountains.

Melissa’s journey to finding peace was long and marked by both pain and healing. Busfield, who became a father figure to Melissa’s children, had three children of his own. Together, they embrace their blended family, cherishing the moments spent with their grandchildren. In a full-circle moment, she is grateful to be in a different place from where her adoptive father was, wishing he could have experienced the happiness of grandparenting and the support of a lifelong partner.

Melissa’s life story is a testament to resilience, self-discovery, and the importance of mental health. Through her public journey, she not only brought to light her own struggles but also inspired others to confront their own family secrets with courage. From a child given up at birth to a celebrated actress and loving grandmother, Melissa’s life serves as a reminder of the power of forgiveness, healing, and the unique bonds that create family.
