Inside the hectic life of Australia’s biggest family.

When Jeni first met her husband, Ray, she was absolutely certain of one thing—having children was never part of her plan.

“Ray always dreamed of having at least four kids, and I thought that was crazy. Who has that many kids?” Jeni shared with Mamamia.

Fast forward over three decades, and their lives took a different turn. Today, they are the proud parents of 16 children.

Managing a Household of 18

Life in the Bonell household is anything but ordinary. Residing in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, Jeni and Ray have mastered the art of balancing their large family while keeping a sense of humor along the way. Their family consists of nine boys and seven girls: Jesse, 35, Brooke, 34, Claire, 31, Natalie, 30, Karl, 28, Samuel, 26, Cameron, 25, Sabrina, 24, Tim, 22, Brandon, 20, Eve, 19, Nate, 17, Rachel, 16, Eric, 15, Damian, 14, and Katelyn, 10.

Comedian Jim Gaffigan once joked, “You know what it’s like having a fourth kid? Imagine you’re drowning, then someone hands you a baby.” Now imagine having 16 kids. That’s the Bonell family’s reality.

Jeni spends approximately $600 a week on groceries just to keep their home stocked. With the rising cost of food, that number has increased by about $50. Feeding a family of 18, including the eight kids still living at home, is no small feat.

Each week, they go through 50 liters of milk, 14 boxes of cereal, 45 tubs of yogurt, and an astonishing four dozen eggs. “We use one to two loaves of bread every day,” Jeni adds.

The Challenge of Capturing a Family Photo

With a family this large, even something as simple as taking a photo can be a major challenge. “You need a super wide lens, and there’s always someone looking away, making a funny face, or blinking,” Jeni laughs. “But we love those imperfections in our pictures. They may not be flawless, but that’s what makes them special.”

But capturing memories isn’t the only logistical challenge. Imagine having 16 kids, maintaining a home, and keeping up with part-time jobs. That’s what daily life looks like for Jeni and Ray.

“I used to think life was hectic when the kids were younger,” Jeni says, “but I’m actually busier now that they’re older.” With three different schools to manage, part-time jobs, sports activities, and academic responsibilities, the schedule is relentless. Still, she wouldn’t trade it for anything. “Life is incredibly busy—but it’s also wonderful.”

Evenings in the Bonell household are a spectacle. “Think about a normal family dinner, then multiply that by eight,” Jeni jokes. “That’s what our evenings are like.”

Making Every Dollar Count

With so many mouths to feed, the Bonells have perfected the art of stretching every dollar. Jeni is well-known for her budget-friendly meals, which cost anywhere from $2 to $10 per serving. She often shares her grocery hauls and meal ideas on YouTube to help other large families manage their budgets.

“It’s tough for everyone right now,” Jeni acknowledges. “We all feel the financial squeeze.”

To maintain order, she has implemented a structured household system. Every child over the age of eight has assigned chores. Additionally, Jeni teaches her children the importance of cooking at a young age. “Our 12-year-old can prepare a roast dinner for 20 with almost no help,” she says proudly.

Laundry is another massive task. On average, Jeni washes three full loads of laundry per day—equivalent to six standard loads. As for grocery shopping, she typically fills two carts per trip. “I always bring one of the kids along to help carry everything,” she says.

Financial Responsibility and Sacrifice

Despite the size of their family, the Bonells take pride in their financial independence. They are working hard to pay off their mortgage without relying on government assistance.

“It’s expensive,” Jeni admits, “and you really have to budget carefully.”

Even though their faith plays a significant role in their lives, Jeni makes it clear that having 16 children wasn’t solely influenced by religion. “God has a funny sense of humor,” she laughs.

Ray, an electrician, agrees. “This life isn’t for everyone, but it works for us. It just feels right.”

Keeping Their Marriage Strong

Even with the chaos of managing 16 children, Jeni and Ray prioritize their relationship.

“Do I get time alone with my wife? Absolutely,” Ray says with a smile. “We make sure to take care of each other.”

Their two eldest children have moved out and started families of their own, making Jeni and Ray proud grandparents. Despite the changes, their family continues to grow, and with every new addition, their bond becomes even stronger.

Organization is Key

Running a household of this size requires meticulous planning. To keep things running smoothly, Jeni prepares school uniforms and lunches the night before and maintains a rotating chore chart.

“When a child turns eight, they join the rotation,” she explains. “They take turns sweeping, mopping, setting the table, and helping with meal prep.”

Jeni also shares snack ideas on YouTube, including air fryer egg cups and pizza bites—quick, easy, and perfect for school lunches.

For the Bonells, maintaining an efficient system ensures that everyone contributes. Despite the constant whirlwind of activity, love and teamwork remain at the heart of their home.

Finding Joy in the Journey

Whether it’s preparing meals, tackling laundry, or squeezing in a coffee date, the Bonells handle it all with a sense of humor and joy.

Their story proves that, with a bit of creativity, solid organization, and plenty of love, anything is possible. Raising 16 children is no easy task, but for Jeni and Ray, it’s simply part of their exciting journey.

From sharing budget-friendly meal tips to embracing the beautiful chaos of a large family, the Bonells have turned everyday life into an art. Their home is filled with cherished memories, laughter, and unconditional love.

If there’s one takeaway from their experience, it’s that family—no matter how big—is always a treasure.
