Georgia boy recovering after horrifying sleepover prank

A harmless sleepover turned into a nightmare for a 12-year-old Georgia boy when a so-called prank by his friends left him with severe burns on his face. What was meant to be a fun gathering quickly turned tragic after his trusted peers poured scalding water on him while he slept, peeling off the skin from his face and causing immense physical and emotional trauma.

Trey West, a young boy from Georgia, spent New Year’s Day in a hospital bed instead of celebrating with family. He was recovering from second-degree burns that covered much of his face after three boys—supposedly his friends—thought it would be funny to dump boiling water on him. The incident took place during a sleepover at a neighbor’s apartment in Tifton. According to reports by WALB 10, Trey had been invited to spend the night with three boys ranging from ages 12 to 15. Everything seemed normal at first, but while Trey was sleeping, the others were playing video games. At some point during the night, one of them poured the hot water on his face. His mother, Tiffany West, described the horror and disbelief she felt when she learned what had happened.

“I mean, I really can’t describe it now. In that moment I was just mad, hurt, in shock,” Tiffany said, recounting the moment she realized her son had been attacked in what some considered a joke. The burns Trey suffered were second-degree, which, according to Medical News Today, can be intensely painful and often result in long-term scarring. The healing process can stretch over several months and may leave permanent reminders of the trauma. “I was seeing red. I was just trying to hurry up and get him some help,” Tiffany added. Her instincts kicked in, and she rushed her son to get the urgent care he needed.

Doctors transported Trey to a specialized burn center in Augusta where he underwent surgery to treat the damage to his skin. The road to recovery was expected to be long and challenging. “He had to have surgery. Of course, he is out of surgery and is recovering at home now. But it is going to take him 12 to 14 days just to begin healing,” Tiffany said. The aftermath of the injury wasn’t just physical; it came with emotional wounds too. The trust that had been broken was almost as painful as the burns. Trey’s aunt, Nachelle Austile, commented on the emotional state of the boy following the incident. “You got to be in shock to know your friends are capable of doing this to you. Like somebody you trusted, it’s just horrible. He never thought something like this would happen to him,” she said.

Austile explained that Trey seemed emotionally detached in the days following the incident. “I always ask him if he’s mad, sad… he just doesn’t have any emotion about it,” she said, while Tiffany added, “he’s numb about it.” It’s not unusual for young victims of trauma to experience emotional disconnection while trying to process overwhelming pain. What was more heartbreaking was that this wasn’t the result of an accident—it was the result of a decision made by children who should have known better.

Authorities responded by arresting the three boys responsible for the act. However, they were later released to their families and are currently awaiting court hearings scheduled for the following month. The legal process will determine whether this horrifying act will be categorized as assault or handled as a juvenile mistake gone too far.

In the meantime, the local community has come together to support Trey and his family. The outpouring of love, donations, and prayers gave the family a much-needed emotional boost during a difficult time. Tiffany West turned to Facebook to share her gratitude. “I woke up to SO much LOVE being shown to my son!” she wrote in a heartfelt post. “It brings tears to my eyes to know so many people care for me & my son and that we are not alone in this.” She went on to describe the overwhelming emotions she felt—both sadness from the ordeal and gratitude that her son was still alive. “I drop to my knees every day thanking God that my baby is still here and he is going to be okay because it could have been worse,” she wrote in a January 3, 2025 update.

Calling her son a “warrior,” Tiffany expressed how much the kindness of strangers and friends meant to their family. “Every donation, gift, encouraging word, and prayer has put a smile on my son’s face!” she wrote. Days later, she posted another update, letting everyone know that Trey’s recovery was going well. “My son is recovering beautifully since surgery! He may be able to go back to school next week after his second follow-up appointment Tuesday!” she said. She admitted there were still some hard moments, but overall, he was in good spirits. “When we first got home from the hospital, he had to stay elevated and sleep in a recliner but now he’s able to sleep normal in his own bed. I don’t only cry because of sadness and madness but also because of joy that my baby boy is going to be just fine.”

One of the most touching moments was a video Tiffany shared on January 11, showing Trey smiling and dancing with his little sister. “Video of my son & his baby sister. He’s healing beautifully! Nobody But God,” she captioned it. Despite the horrific experience, Trey’s spirit was slowly returning.

This incident is more than just a tragic story. It serves as a serious warning about the dangers of reckless behavior disguised as humor. It also highlights the importance of teaching empathy, kindness, and accountability to children at a young age. A single thoughtless act can leave a lasting impact on a life. As Trey continues to recover physically and emotionally, his story reminds us all that healing is possible—with support, love, and time.
