It’s heartbreaking how cruel some people can be to animals, especially dogs—creatures known for their loyalty, love, and trust in humans. Sadly, some dogs endure unimaginable abuse, and one of the most shocking stories in recent memory is that of Buddy, a gentle pup who became the victim of a horrifying act of cruelty. His face was severely burned in an attack that stunned the nation, but thanks to the dedication and compassion of his rescuers and medical team, Buddy’s journey toward healing has turned into a symbol of hope and resilience.
In April 2021, the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi shared the devastating news about Buddy, a dog described as “happy and carefree,” who had never posed a threat to anyone. Buddy was found with his face brutally burned, his fur charred black, and an extension cord wrapped tightly around his neck. The cruelty was incomprehensible. Later, a child under the age of 12 confessed to setting Buddy on fire. However, because of his age, he could not be prosecuted under Mississippi law. The legal system’s limitations frustrated many, but the focus quickly shifted to helping Buddy survive.
Buddy was taken into the care of the Tunica Humane Society and received immediate medical attention from Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Under the supervision of veterinary professionals, he began a long and uncertain road to recovery. Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, associate professor and veterinary surgeon, explained at the time that Buddy’s vital signs were stable but emphasized that burns are among the most difficult injuries to treat. “This is very much the bottom of a tall mountain to be climbed,” she said. “We are keeping him comfortable, changing his bandages, and managing any problems as they arise.”
Despite the extensive damage to his face, there was some good news early on—Buddy’s eyesight appeared to be intact. Although his eyelids were injured, doctors believed surgery could repair the damage and preserve at least some of his vision. His entire upper body remained heavily bandaged, but even in this condition, Buddy’s spirit remained strong. He didn’t give up. In fact, the team caring for him was constantly impressed by his resilience and his ability to stay positive through daily challenges.
“He continues to move forward daily,” the Tunica Humane Society posted on Facebook. “Never once disappointing his doctors. Everyone involved has been pleased with the results of his skin grafts. Burn wounds heal slowly, but Buddy is excelling in his recovery.” Each day brought small milestones. His face began to show signs of improvement, and he started learning basic commands again. Through every step, his sweet personality shone through. “This sweet, friendly dog didn’t deserve what happened to him,” the Humane Society shared. “It was extremely cruel and calculated.”
They went on to express a hope that something good could come from Buddy’s suffering—that his story might inspire change and bring justice for animals who endure similar acts of violence. The public responded with overwhelming support. Buddy’s story went viral, and thousands of people from across the country sent messages of love and encouragement. Donations poured in to help fund his medical care. Local news outlets covered his progress, shining a light on both the brutality of the attack and the kindness of the people trying to heal him.
As time passed, Buddy underwent multiple skin graft procedures and began needing fewer bandages. Slowly but surely, he began returning to his old self. A month before a major breakthrough in his healing, Tunica Humane Society shared that he had become noticeably more joyful. “Now that his ears are loose from the bandages, he is much happier and more playful. I’m sure he is feeling so much joy as he slowly gets his life back to normal.”
On August 7, the rescue shared what they called a “huge turning point” in Buddy’s recovery. For the first time since the attack, Buddy’s facial bandages were removed without heavy sedation, allowing him to open his eyes naturally. After over three months in darkness, Buddy could finally see again. “His eyes were actually open, and he was very aware,” the team wrote. “In answer to your thousands and thousands of prayers, YES, Buddy can still see.” This moment marked not just a physical recovery, but an emotional one. “Buddy’s last real memory of vision was in the final horrific moments just before his face was set on fire. In the blink of an eye, this dog’s whole life changed.”
After regaining his sight, Buddy’s personality seemed to blossom. Sandy Williams, the director of Tunica Humane Society, told reporters that Buddy had become a much more energetic and lively dog. “He is happy and playful and walking the halls of the hospital with a great big ball in his mouth. He loves balls. He carries them around so everyone can see.” A video shared by the organization shows Buddy gleefully playing fetch, a testament to how far he had come from those dark early days.
Although Buddy’s recovery has been incredible, he still faces ongoing challenges. His eyelids will require further surgical work to protect his eyes properly, and his skin will remain highly sensitive for the rest of his life. According to Williams, Buddy will need to wear sunscreen when he’s outside and may require eye drops regularly. “He is not going to be a dog that can stay out in the sun for hours at a time,” she explained.
Despite these lifelong needs, Buddy is a survivor, and his journey has touched hearts across the nation.
