Judges Thought She Picked A Hard Song, But Once She Started Singing

At her 2016 audition for America’s Got Talent (AGT), singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal gave audiences a glimpse of her immense talent before even stepping onto the stage. Grace, who was 12 years old at the time, confidently announced, “I’m doing my own song tonight because I really think it shows who I am.” Although born in Kansas, she was living in New York when she made this statement, full of hope and determination. “Hopefully, I’m hoping it does,” she added, showcasing her humility and quiet confidence.

Grace’s remarkable performance on AGT earned her the nickname “the next Taylor Swift,” a title that hinted at the bright future ahead of her. Not only did she captivate millions of viewers, but she also took home the grand prize of $1 million, winning Season 11 of America’s Got Talent.

When Grace first appeared in front of the judges, Simon Cowell asked her if she believed she could win. Her response was modest but optimistic: “Miracles can happen, so possibly.” This level of belief, paired with her undeniable talent, made her an instant favorite. When Simon asked what song she would be performing, Grace replied simply, “It’s about me.” She then explained that most of her school friends “don’t really know I sing,” giving a glimpse into her life as a relatively unknown talent.

Accompanied by her ukulele, Grace performed “I Don’t Know My Name,” a deeply personal and emotional song about self-discovery and identity. The song’s raw lyrics, “I don’t know my name, I don’t play by the rules of the game,” struck a chord with both the audience and the judges. Her vulnerability and authenticity were palpable, drawing everyone in from the very first note.

As Grace finished her performance, the crowd rose to their feet in a standing ovation. The four judges, who had remained silent until then, were clearly moved by what they had just witnessed. Howie Mandel was the first to speak, sharing his admiration without hesitation. “This is a show about surprises,” he said. “You called yourself a miracle, and I think you are a beautiful, walking miracle.”

Howie continued by referencing the song’s lyrics. “You’re original,” he said. “People may not know your name now, but they will soon.” With that, Howie pressed the Golden Buzzer, which sent Grace straight to the live shows. Overwhelmed with emotion, Grace broke down in tears as Howie ran to embrace her. “You are amazing,” he told her, marking the beginning of her journey to stardom.

Simon Cowell, known for his often critical feedback, was equally impressed. He praised Grace’s ability to write such a heartfelt song based on her own life experiences. “Grace, you know what I predict for you? You could be the next Taylor Swift,” he said, solidifying his belief in her future success. Heidi Klum echoed his sentiment, calling Grace’s performance “incredible.” Mel B added, “She’s one of a kind.”

In that moment, Grace VanderWaal had not only wowed the judges, but she had also secured her place in the hearts of millions of viewers. Howie even asked Simon, “Do you think we’ve found a star?” Simon’s reply was confident: “I think we’ve got a star,” though he joked that he was “annoyed” he didn’t get to press the Golden Buzzer himself.

After AGT, Grace’s career took off. She ventured into acting, starring in the Disney+ movie Stargirl, and has since released several albums. Her acting talents will also be on display in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, where she plays a pop star.
