Camp Mystic counselor Emma Foltz helps save 14 campers in Texas flood

The devastation left behind by the recent flooding in Texas is truly beyond comprehension. So far, 81 lives have been lost across six counties, and one of the hardest-hit places is Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls. Tragically, 27 campers and counselors are confirmed dead, with more still unaccounted for. Amid this heartbreaking loss, stories of courage and selflessness have started to emerge—none more moving than that of counselor Emma Foltz, whose brave actions saved the lives of 14 young campers.

The catastrophic flash flooding struck swiftly and without mercy. Fueled by relentless rainfall, the Guadalupe River near Kerrville overflowed, sweeping away homes, vehicles, and everything in its path. The scale of the damage led President Donald Trump to issue a major disaster declaration for Kerr County, triggering federal aid and mobilizing resources for search and rescue operations that are still ongoing. Local officials and emergency teams continue to search for the missing, hoping for miracles in the midst of chaos.

Camp Mystic, nestled in the scenic Texas Hill Country, was especially vulnerable when the river surged. The camp’s leadership confirmed the heartbreaking news that 27 individuals had died, including both campers and staff. With several still unaccounted for, the community clings to hope as they await news of their loved ones.

“Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly,” the camp shared in an emotional statement on its website. They also noted that they are working closely with local authorities in ongoing efforts to locate the missing girls. “We ask for your continued prayers, respect, and privacy for each of our families affected. May the Lord continue to wrap His presence around all of us,” the statement concluded.

One of the most chilling accounts of the flood came from Amanda Sue Jones, a survivor who recounted her experience during an interview with CNN. On the Fourth of July, Amanda and her family managed to escape the rising waters—but the experience left a deep emotional scar. She described how quickly the flood overtook the area, saying it happened “in a matter of minutes.” People were asleep in their cabins when the water began to rise, and before anyone could truly grasp what was happening, entire buildings were being washed away.

“It was just immeasurably fast,” Amanda recalled. “Everything seemed fine. There wasn’t a lot of panic at first; it wasn’t chaotic. But no one could see past the bridge, and then, all of a sudden, it was like a wall of water came crashing through.” She explained that her campsite was only about 20 yards from a small tributary of the river. Although the water level had been rising overnight, it had stayed within its banks. “But the moment it spilled over into the grass, that’s when we made the call to evacuate.”

As news of the tragedy spread, so too did stories of bravery and sacrifice. Many people risked, and some lost, their lives trying to help others escape. In the face of despair, the community has shown remarkable strength, coming together to mourn, support, and uplift each other.

One story that has touched hearts across the nation is that of Emma Foltz, a counselor at Camp Mystic who is now being hailed as a hero. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry took to X (formerly Twitter) to honor Emma’s heroic actions. According to his post, Emma played a vital role in guiding 14 young campers to safety, risking her own life in the process.

Emma, who has worked at Camp Mystic for three years, is a native of Alexandria, Louisiana, and is currently a senior at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. “She played an instrumental role in helping evacuate 14 of her campers to safety,” Gov. Landry wrote. “Please join me in thanking Emma for all her hard work and bravery under immense pressure.”

On Facebook, people poured into the comments to express their admiration and gratitude. Many described Emma as a “hero,” thanking her for her quick thinking and incredible courage. “Thank you for your quick thinking and for saving the children. May God bless you abundantly, and may your family in Louisiana shine with admiration!” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Bless her. I know the rescued counselors will need great comfort.”

One individual wrote simply, “Hero,” while another echoed the sentiment, saying, “Thank you, Emma! May God continue to bless your life for showing such bravery and resilience in such an unfathomable situation. You saved 14 little girls’ lives, and that can never be repaid. I hope the state of Louisiana honors you in a big way!” Yet another said, “God bless this wonderful, brave and amazing young lady!”

Stories like Emma’s shine a light in the darkness of this terrible event. Her actions remind us that even in our worst moments, humanity can rise to meet the challenge. She didn’t hesitate. She didn’t run. She stayed and fought to protect the children in her care. Because of her, 14 families were spared the agony that too many others are now facing.

Let’s honor Emma by sharing her story. Her bravery deserves to be known, and her selfless act should be recognized not just in Louisiana, but across the country. Let us also keep the victims, survivors, and their families in our thoughts and prayers as they begin to pick up the pieces. In the aftermath of loss, may healing come—not just through time, but through the compassion and strength of community.

The road to recovery will be long, and the emotional scars will last for years. But through acts of courage, solidarity, and faith, Texas will begin to heal. And heroes like Emma Foltz will serve as a lasting reminder of the power of human resilience and love in the face of disaster.
