Many stray and neglected dogs go without grooming, which can lead to significant distress as their fur becomes tangled and matted. A simple haircut can make an enormous difference in their well-being. Such was the case recently when a severely matted dog underwent a transformation that gave him a new lease on life.
On July 16, the South Plains SPCA shared a story about what they described as “the worst case of dog neglect we have ever encountered.” The dog, a six-year-old, was found with extremely thick, matted fur and was in poor condition. According to the SPCA, the dog’s fur was so tightly matted that it had grown into his skin, causing painful, rotten spots. His nails had grown to an astonishing two inches in length.
“His hair growth was about five years of matting,” said Kim Moyers, president of the South Plains SPCA, in an interview with KLBK-TV. “It’s awful to think that he was probably seen in different places and overlooked. I don’t see how anyone could miss a dog roaming in such a condition. I’ve never encountered anything like this before—it was truly shocking.”
The South Plains SPCA took the dog into their care and named him Matt, a reference to his matted fur. Despite his poor condition, the team was determined to help him recover and provide a second chance at life.
Every attempt to cut Matt’s hair caused him to yelp in pain, making sedation necessary for the grooming process. As they worked through his fur, rescuers discovered a collar and leash embedded within the mats. After hours of careful grooming, they managed to remove three pounds of fur—the result of five years of neglect.
“There were thousands of goathead stickers, sticks, grass, and even beetles tangled in his fur,” the SPCA reported. The tight fur had caused severe bruising on Matt’s body, and he was diagnosed as anemic. However, there was a silver lining: Matt tested negative for heartworms and tick-borne diseases, likely because ticks were unable to penetrate his thick fur.
Though Matt still faces a long road to recovery and will require dental work once his bloodwork stabilizes, the removal of his matted fur has already transformed his life. With the heavy burden lifted, Matt now looks like an entirely different dog.
“After one of our professional groomers—who is also an SPCA foster—groomed him, he looked absolutely amazing,” said Tori Houston, Matt’s foster caregiver, in an interview with People. “He is one of the most gorgeous dogs I’ve ever seen—truly stunning.”
Following his grooming, Matt’s personality began to shine through. The SPCA described him as a “sweet boy” who, despite his traumatic past, was eager to experience life without the weight of his matted fur. Houston recounted Matt’s first walk after his transformation, noting how he seemed to revel in the newfound freedom.
“He went for his very first walk without all that bulk of hair—probably the first time in five years,” Houston told KLBK. “His little bottom was swaying back and forth, his tail was wagging, and he looked so happy. It was heartwarming to see him finally enjoy such a simple pleasure.”
Currently, Matt is being fostered by Houston as he continues his recovery. Once he is healthy and strong enough, he will be placed up for adoption in hopes of finding a loving, permanent home.
The transformation is nothing short of remarkable. It’s heartbreaking to think of the years Matt spent suffering in neglect, burdened by the weight of his matted fur. Yet, thanks to the compassionate efforts of the South Plains SPCA and dedicated caregivers like Houston, Matt now has a chance to live the happy, healthy life he deserves.
