Dog found in dumpster wrapped up in duct tape: “I have never seen anything like it”

It’s truly disturbing to see how cruel some people can be to innocent animals. One recent case has left many people both horrified and heartbroken: a defenseless dog was discovered with his entire head wrapped tightly in duct tape, leaving him completely immobilized and unable to help himself.

Fortunately, despite the shocking abuse he endured, this story ends with hope and a happy reunion.

On April 15, the Nebraska Humane Society shared details of this appalling case on their social media. It began when Animal Control officers responded to a call from a concerned individual who had heard sounds coming from inside a dumpster. Initially, the caller assumed it was a raccoon rustling around in the trash. However, upon closer inspection, they were shocked to find that it was actually a dog trapped inside.

The condition the dog was found in was almost beyond belief. His head was entirely encased in duct tape, and his tail was also wrapped up. Even worse, his front and back legs were tightly taped together, preventing him from moving. Additionally, his fur was matted with food and other debris, indicating that he had been discarded like garbage.

Kevin Wiederin, a staff member who was part of the response team, described the horrifying scene to KETV: “I have never seen anything like it. The dog’s entire muzzle was taped, and the tape covered his eyes as well. He was just sitting there, completely helpless, with his legs bound together. It was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever witnessed.”

Wiederin went on to express the deep revulsion he felt upon seeing the dog’s condition. “I was absolutely sickened. I can’t imagine how anyone could do something so cruel to a living creature — especially a sweet, helpless dog — and then toss him aside like he was nothing more than trash.”

It was a true miracle that the dog was found when he was. According to the Nebraska Humane Society, only about thirty minutes after Animal Control arrived and rescued him, a garbage truck came by and emptied the dumpster. Had the dog not been discovered in time, the outcome could have been tragically different.

After being rescued, the dog was immediately taken to the Nebraska Humane Society for urgent care. The team sedated him to make the removal of the duct tape less traumatic and began the careful process of removing the tape. Due to the debris entangled in his fur, they had to shave some areas to clean him up completely.

Despite the abuse, the little dog proved to be resilient. The staff noted in a Facebook post that he had only mild skin irritation and, remarkably, appeared to be in good spirits. They said he was perky and even wagging his tail — a heartwarming sign of hope after such an ordeal.

Once the tape was removed, the staff was relieved to discover that the dog had a microchip. Thanks to that, they learned his name was Leo and that he had gone missing a few days earlier.

Leo’s owner, Erin Dillon-Pasillas, recounted the anxiety-filled days after her beloved dog vanished. She explained that Leo slipped out of the house when she was dropping her son off at school. After realizing he was missing, Erin frantically contacted shelters and searched for any leads on her dog’s whereabouts.

“Every day the stress grew. There was no news, just silence,” Erin told KETV. “When I got the call, I was shaking. I kept thinking, please let it be my dog, please let it be Leo.”

Erin was immensely relieved to be reunited with her beloved pet, but she was also deeply shaken by the cruelty he had endured. “He’s the sweetest dog,” she said. “I can’t understand why anyone would want to hurt him like that.” She shared her gratitude with the Nebraska Humane Society for their care and swift action, and she said she planned to give Leo a warm bath and take him for a full check-up at the vet.

As of now, there are no leads on who committed this horrendous act. The Nebraska Humane Society noted that there are no security cameras near the dumpster where Leo was found. They are urging anyone who might have information about the case to contact Animal Services at 402-444-7800. To encourage tips, they are offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the cruelty that some animals face, but it also highlights the compassion and dedication of those who work to protect them. Leo’s story could have ended in tragedy, but thanks to the swift response of a concerned citizen and the efforts of the Nebraska Humane Society, he is now safe and recovering at home with his family.

The fact that someone would duct tape a dog, throw him into a dumpster, and leave him to die is beyond comprehension. It’s a heartbreaking and enraging act of abuse. Still, we’re grateful that Leo survived and is now receiving the love and care he deserves. We hope justice will be served and that whoever committed this awful crime will be found and held accountable. No animal deserves to suffer such cruelty, and it’s up to all of us to ensure that their lives are respected and protected.
