George Lopez’s wife sacrificed an organ for her famous husband.

Being married to a Hollywood star isn’t always glamorous—it can be filled with unique challenges and demands. Yet some couples manage to make it work through love, patience, and mutual respect. Ann Serrano, however, went far beyond what most would do for their partner. She made an extraordinary sacrifice for her famous husband, offering him not just love and support—but one of her own organs. Despite her devotion, she faced an unexpected betrayal in return.

Though Ann Serrano may not be a household name, her contributions both personally and professionally deserve recognition far beyond just being labeled “the wife of a celebrity.” Ann has her own accomplishments in the entertainment industry. She has worked as both an actress and a producer, with appearances in popular shows such as Arrested Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm. But beyond her career, she’s also a devoted mother to her daughter, Mayan, whom she shares with her well-known husband.

Their love story began in a classic Hollywood way—at a casting call. For Ann, it was her first audition, but it turned into something more when she met a man who would become both her husband and life partner. They got married in September 1993 and welcomed their daughter three years later, in 1996. For years, their marriage appeared solid, a celebrity couple admired for their apparent closeness. But in the early 2000s, everything changed when her husband received devastating news about his health.

Doctors informed him that his kidneys were failing due to a hereditary condition. He needed a kidney transplant to survive. Despite the urgency, he delayed the surgery for nearly a year, fearing the media would discover his illness. He was especially worried that their nine-year-old daughter would hear about it from the tabloids before hearing it from him. As a public figure, he managed to keep his condition private for a long time, but it soon became clear he couldn’t do it alone. That’s when Ann stepped up in a way few could imagine—offering him one of her kidneys.

For Ann, the decision came easily. In an interview, she reflected on her choice, saying, “It’s truly remarkable to help someone in this way. You’re giving the gift of life.” The surgery was a success, and her husband’s body accepted the transplant. In fact, his overall health improved dramatically—he even lost 45 pounds. Thanks to Ann’s incredible act of love and sacrifice, the couple looked forward to many happy years together. But sadly, life didn’t unfold the way they had hoped.

The man Ann gave her kidney to is none other than comedian George Lopez, beloved for his role in The George Lopez Show. Over the years, George became a favorite among fans, and in 2005, Time magazine honored him as one of “The Top 25 Hispanics in America.” His rise to fame was anything but easy. Born in 1961 in Los Angeles, George faced a difficult childhood. His father abandoned him at two months old, and his mother left when he was 10, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother.

As a child, George was quiet and reserved, often retreating into his imagination. Few would have predicted that he’d one day become a Hollywood star, but he managed to turn his personal pain into comedy that resonated with millions. “I found my comedic voice in the early ’90s, and my grandmother was part of that inspiration,” George once said. His big break came thanks to actress Sandra Bullock, who noticed the lack of Hispanic representation on television. She helped George land a deal with ABC, and in 2002, he became one of the few Latinos to star in his own sitcom. The show was an instant success, attracting nearly 10 million viewers in its first season. George wore many hats—co-creator, writer, producer, and star.

Despite the show’s popularity, it was canceled in 2007. George was disappointed, later telling the Los Angeles Times, “TV has become really, really white again.” Professionally, it was a setback. Personally, he was recovering from major surgery. On April 19, 2005, George checked into Cedars-Sinai Medical Center under the name “Tom Ace,” unsure whether he’d survive. Thanks to Ann’s generosity, he pulled through. They had surgery in side-by-side rooms, and their daughter visited the next day. Ann reported feeling no different after donating her kidney.

Unfortunately, despite all they had shared, their marriage didn’t last. After 18 years together, Ann filed for divorce in 2010, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The divorce was finalized in 2011. The reason? George’s infidelity. Ann later explained that George’s troubled childhood contributed to his issues, but that didn’t excuse his behavior. In an interview with Piers Morgan, George admitted he was partly to blame for the marriage’s collapse, especially considering Ann had literally saved his life.

Their marriage had already been tested about six years in, when George was unfaithful for the first time. Wanting to keep their family intact, Ann insisted on therapy, hoping their daughter would grow up with her father present. George appeared to change, but Ann warned him that if he strayed again, it would be over. Sadly, he did, and this time the affair became public. Ann discovered the truth in a tabloid—a crushing revelation. “It was a really devastating way to find out,” Ann said on TheHourGlass Podcast in 2024.

Ann divorced him, and their daughter Mayan stood by her side. In a TikTok video, Mayan asked her parents why they divorced. Ann’s response: “Your dad didn’t understand that when you get married, you have to stop dating other people.” A year later, Mayan posted, “He cheated. She divorced him. We kept almost everything.”

George, seeking to repair the damage, entered therapy with Mayan. He accepted responsibility, saying, “I’m accountable for this, and I’m committed to spending the rest of my life making amends.” In time, father and daughter reconciled, even co-starring in NBC’s Lopez vs. Lopez, a show inspired by their real-life healing. Despite everything, Ann and George remain close. When Mayan asked if they still loved each other, both said yes. Ann called George her “husband and friend,” and George replied, “I love Ann.”
