Pit bull with volleyball-sized tumor on her leg gets both good and bad news

Animal shelters across the country perform remarkable work each day, offering homeless pets a new lease on life. These places often serve as a final hope for animals that have been abused, abandoned, or suffering from severe medical issues. The staff and volunteers at these shelters dedicate their time and hearts to ensuring these animals receive the care, compassion, and dignity they deserve—no matter what shape they arrive in.

Such was the case with a sweet pit bull named Libby. When she was found wandering the streets in August 2023, she was clearly in distress. Rescuers from the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, the largest animal intake shelter in Washington state, took her in. Despite the shelter being overwhelmed—with dozens of animals arriving each day and several urgent medical cases back-to-back—they knew they had to help Libby. Even at first glance, it was obvious that something was seriously wrong.

Libby had a massive tumor, roughly the size of a volleyball, protruding from her upper leg. Weighing nearly 10 pounds, it was one of the largest tumors the shelter’s veterinary team had ever seen. But despite her painful condition, Libby’s spirit hadn’t been broken. Shelter staff described her as full of life, with a sweet face and gentle, kind eyes that touched everyone who met her. There was something undeniably special about her—a quiet strength, an unspoken plea for help, and an undeniable will to live.

The staff at the Humane Society made it clear that Libby deserved the very best care, regardless of the challenges ahead. In a public post, they acknowledged the uncertainty of her prognosis, but promised to explore every possible option. The first step was to ease her suffering. Libby was placed on pain medication to help relieve the intense discomfort she was experiencing, and she was showered with love and attention from everyone at the shelter.

An x-ray confirmed their concerns: the tumor was embedded in the bone of her upper right leg. The inflammation caused by the tumor had triggered its extreme growth and was a source of constant, excruciating pain. The only possible course of action was amputation.

Thanks to the generosity of kind-hearted donors and supporters of the shelter, they were able to fund Libby’s surgery. The operation was carried out at BluePearl Pet Hospital, where skilled veterinary staff successfully removed the affected leg. The surgery was a turning point. Libby, who had likely been suffering for months, was finally free from the heavy burden that had weighed her down—both physically and emotionally.

But even with the tumor gone, Libby’s journey wasn’t over. Post-surgery tests revealed heartbreaking news: she had aggressive bone cancer. It was a diagnosis that meant her time might be short. While this news was devastating, it only deepened the shelter’s commitment to making sure that Libby experienced joy, safety, and comfort for however long she had left.

Miraculously, something beautiful happened. One of the veterinary technicians who had cared for Libby during her treatment felt a deep connection with the dog. Moved by Libby’s resilience and soulful eyes, the vet tech made the selfless decision to adopt her. She understood the seriousness of Libby’s condition but refused to let her spend her remaining days in a shelter or alone.

“There’s something in her eyes that begs for love and safety,” the vet tech shared. “I couldn’t turn away from that.”

In her new home, Libby received a new name—Wiggles—a fitting tribute to her lively spirit and wiggly tail. She quickly adjusted to life as a beloved pet. She spends her days playing with her dog brother, lounging on the couch for warm, cozy naps, and soaking up the love of her new family. Despite the hardship she’s endured, Wiggles now gets to experience what every dog deserves: a safe, loving home.

The shelter shared an update with the community, expressing gratitude to everyone who played a role in giving Libby a second chance. “Though we’re uncertain how much time she has left,” the Humane Society wrote, “we know she’ll spend her remaining days surrounded by love and comfort thanks to the kindness of our community.”

Libby’s story is one of heartbreak, healing, and hope. It reminds us that even in the darkest situations, there’s always the potential for light. Her transformation wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated staff at the shelter, the veterinary professionals who treated her, and the donors who believed she was worth saving. Most of all, it was made possible by love—the kind that sees beyond scars, beyond diagnoses, beyond limitations.

While no one knows exactly how long Wiggles has, what’s certain is that her remaining time will be filled with care, warmth, and happiness. For a dog who once faced so much pain and uncertainty, that is the greatest gift of all.

To everyone who supports animal shelters, rescues strays, or donates to causes like this—thank you. Because of you, dogs like Libby get a second chance. Please consider sharing her story to celebrate her journey and inspire others to open their hearts to animals in need. ❤️
