She initially believed it was a raccoon rummaging through trash, but what she found instead was horrifying. Inside the dumpster, barely able to move or make a sound, was a small dog bound in layers of duct tape.

When rescuers arrived, they were stunned by what they saw. The dog’s head, including his entire muzzle and eyes, had been completely wrapped in duct tape. His legs were also bound together, making any movement impossible. Even his tail had been taped down. The poor dog was covered in debris, and bits of food and other materials were matted into his fur.

Kevin Wiederin, one of the responding animal control officers, told KETV that he had never seen anything like it in his entire career. “The entire muzzle was taped, and then there was tape covering up the eyes, and it was just sitting there, unable to move. The front and back paws were taped together, too,” he explained. “I was absolutely sickened. It was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t imagine doing that to another living being, let alone a helpless little dog—and then throwing it away like garbage.”

The timing of the discovery was critical. According to NHS, just thirty minutes after the call was made and Animal Control arrived, the dumpster was emptied by a waste management truck. Had the call come in even slightly later, the outcome would have been tragically different. It’s clear that this dog was deliberately abandoned in a place where he was unlikely to be found in time.

The dog was quickly brought to the Nebraska Humane Society for urgent care. Upon arrival, he was sedated to keep him calm while the veterinary staff carefully worked to remove the layers of tape. His fur was so tangled and filthy that the team had to shave him in order to remove all of the debris and dirt embedded in his coat.

Despite the trauma he had endured, the staff at NHS reported that the dog—once freed from his bindings—was surprisingly resilient. Most remarkably, the little dog, even after such a terrifying experience, was in good spirits. “He perked up and was wagging his tail,” they wrote.

His owner, Erin Dillon-Pasillas, had been frantically searching for him ever since. She told KETV that Leo had escaped from the house while she was dropping her son off at school.

For days, Erin called local shelters, hoping for any news. “Every day got more stressful… it was just crickets,” she said. “I was shaking, calling them. You know, thinking, please be my dog, please be my dog.”

When she received the call from NHS that her dog had been found, she was both overwhelmed with relief and deeply emotional about what Leo had been through. “He’s the sweetest dog,” she said, her voice breaking. “I don’t know why anyone would do this.” Erin took Leo home, vowing to give him a warm bath, a thorough vet check-up, and all the love he deserved to recover from such a horrific ordeal.
