Donna Lochmann, the Chief Life-Saving Officer at SRSL, responded to the call. In an interview with The Dodo, she shared her insight into why strays like this puppy sometimes choose cemeteries as refuge. “They just get under the fence and decide that they like it because it’s quiet,” she explained. “It’s a huge cemetery, so they have a lot of space to get away from people.” The vast and silent grounds provide a safe haven for animals who have learned not to trust the bustling world outside.

Determined to help, Lochmann and the cemetery staff worked together to come up with a plan to safely capture the puppy and get him the care he needed. Their first challenge was locating him. They began a thorough search of the cemetery, combing the grounds for any sign of the stray. Eventually, their patience paid off when a worker heard a rustling noise beneath a bush. When they looked underneath, they found the little dog resting, likely exhausted from his time surviving on his own.

With gentle hands and calming words, they carefully secured the puppy and brought him to safety. Lochmann took him straight to a veterinarian, where his paws and skin could be treated. The medical team gave him the attention and care he had been missing for so long. During his recovery, they decided to name the puppy Kamper—after a name inscribed on one of the tombstones near where he had been discovered. According to Lochmann, “It was really emotional for everyone, especially for Kamper and the volunteer who called us.” The little dog didn’t hesitate—he raced over to his rescuers, full of excitement. He jumped up to greet each person, his tail wagging wildly, licking their faces and sharing his affection freely. The bond between them was unmistakable.

The cemetery staff shared in Kamper’s joy, clearly moved by his transformation. “The woman who called was so happy that we’d gotten him and that he was doing so well,” Lochmann recalled. “On our end, we certainly appreciated that she’d contacted us so that he could get some help.” That one compassionate call had changed the course of Kamper’s life, and everyone there that day could feel the weight of that choice.

After his heartfelt visit, Kamper returned to SRSL, but his stay there didn’t last long. In fact, the happy ending came quickly. Kamper was placed with a family—a doctor and their loved ones—who were well-prepared to continue his recovery journey. They gave him medicated baths to soothe and heal his skin, and they even dressed him in cozy pajamas to keep him warm and comfortable. More than just physical care, Kamper received love, attention, and the joyful experiences every puppy deserves.

In his new home, Kamper isn’t alone. He shares the space with several other dogs, many of different ages and backgrounds. Together, they play, run, and nap, forming a pack of furry friends who bring out the best in one another. For Lochmann and the entire SRSL team, seeing Kamper thrive in this environment has been nothing short of heartwarming.

“It’s so fun to watch him play and be happy, knowing that he’s not this scared, sick dog trying to survive on the streets anymore,” Lochmann said. “Now he gets to just be a puppy.”
