The exchange followed a lighthearted moment where McConaughey had given Behar a foot massage, but the tone quickly shifted when the topic of guns came up.

The conversation about gun control hit close to home for McConaughey, who was born and raised in Uvalde, Texas—the site of a tragic school shooting in May 2022. The incident, which left 19 students and two teachers dead at Robb Elementary School, prompted McConaughey to speak out publicly, calling for change in the way America handles gun ownership. The 54-year-old actor took part in a White House briefing after the event, urging Americans to reconsider what is truly necessary when it comes to firearms.
“We need responsible gun ownership, background checks, and an increase in the minimum age to purchase an AR-15 rifle to 21 years old. We also need a waiting period for these weapons, red flag laws, and enforcement for those who violate them. These are reasonable, practical regulations,” McConaughey stated firmly.
The Oscar-winning actor went on to add that responsible gun owners are tired of seeing the Second Amendment “abused and hijacked by deranged individuals.” He has since channeled his advocacy into action, working alongside his wife, Camila Alves, to launch the Greenlights Grant Initiative. The program, according to its website, aims to “create safer school environments and ensure the well-being of our children.”
However, McConaughey’s appearance on *The View* in the fall of 2023 wasn’t just about guns. He was there to promote his new children’s book, *Just Because*, and during the segment, he discussed the inspiration behind the book and talked about his three children. But the conversation shifted when co-host Sunny Hostin praised him for being vocal against violence, particularly gun violence.
“In 2021, you considered running for governor of Texas before deciding to focus on your family. Do you think political office is in your future?” Hostin asked, referencing McConaughey’s previous flirtation with politics. The *Ghosts of Girlfriends Past* star responded thoughtfully, stating, “If it’s where I believe I can be most useful, yes. But right now, I want to be most useful as a father.”
The interview took a more intense turn when Behar brought the discussion back to guns and politics. She asked McConaughey a pointed question: “Do you think you could get elected in Texas being anti-gun?”
Repeating the question before offering a response, McConaughey said, “One thing about me and politics is that if I were to give you a direct answer, it would be like playing a game.” He then politely but firmly pointed his finger at Behar and continued, “I’m not interested in playing games.”
Behar seemed to back off, responding, “Ok, don’t do it.”
After the commercial break, Hostin attempted to smooth over the tension by clarifying McConaughey’s stance: “I’ve done a lot of research on your advocacy, and I don’t believe you’re anti-gun. I think you’re in favor of gun responsibility and legislation.”
