Sally Field’s worst on-screen kiss in her decades-long career might be a surprise to most

I’ve always admired Sally Field. She is a true legend, an incredibly talented actress whose performances have left a lasting impact on Hollywood. At 76, she continues to be a beloved figure, known for her depth and versatility on screen. Throughout her illustrious career, she has shared many on-screen romances, which naturally means she has had her fair share of memorable—and not-so-memorable—kisses.

Recently, Sally Field candidly revealed which of her on-screen kisses was the worst. Although she hesitated at first to name names, she eventually decided to share the surprising truth.

Sally Field is widely recognized as one of the most gifted actresses of her generation, and her impressive body of work speaks for itself. She has captivated audiences with unforgettable performances in both film and television. Among her many standout roles, one that always comes to mind is her portrayal in Steel Magnolias. The funeral scene, in particular, was an emotional powerhouse—she delivered a deeply moving performance, perfectly capturing the raw emotions of love, grief, anger, and heartbreak.

Her career spans decades, with notable performances in some of the most beloved films and television series. Fans remember her fondly for her roles in Gidget, The Flying Nun, Smokey and the Bandit, Forrest Gump, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Erin Brockovich. Each of these roles showcased her remarkable ability to bring characters to life with authenticity and depth.

Born into a working-class showbiz family in Pasadena, California, Sally Field’s path to stardom was far from smooth. In her memoirs, she courageously opened up about the darker aspects of her childhood, revealing that her stepfather subjected her to horrific abuse. She also disclosed that at the age of 17, she underwent a secret abortion. Despite these painful experiences, she grew into an incredibly kind and compassionate person, never allowing her past to define her.

Even today, Sally remains active in the industry. In 2020, she took on the role of Janice in the television series Dispatches From Elsewhere, and in 2022, she portrayed Jessie Buss in Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, a critically acclaimed series that explores the rise of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s. Given her continuous involvement in Hollywood, it’s no surprise that she frequently appears in interviews, often sharing personal anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories.

During a December 1 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, a fan posed an interesting question: What was the worst on-screen kiss she had ever experienced? Field, with a hint of hesitation and laughter, responded, “Oh boy. Shall I really name names here?”

Andy Cohen, clearly intrigued, encouraged her, “I think you should.”

Taking a moment to brace herself, Field finally gave an answer that no one saw coming. “Okay. This is going to be a shocker. Hold on, folks,” she said before dropping the bombshell—her worst on-screen kiss was with none other than Burt Reynolds.

The revelation was particularly surprising given that Field and Reynolds had been romantically involved at the time. Cohen, equally taken aback, immediately followed up with, “But weren’t you dating back then?”

Field admitted that while filming Smokey and the Bandit, she sometimes had to “look the other way” during their kissing scenes. She explained that the experience “just wasn’t something he really did for you.”

Cohen, clearly surprised, responded, “Wow, that’s interesting.”

Field then elaborated, revealing that Reynolds’ kissing style involved a lot of excessive drooling, making their intimate scenes far from enjoyable.

Her history with Reynolds dates back to 1977 when they first met on the set of Smokey and the Bandit. Their relationship lasted for about five years, during which they were frequently in the public eye as one of Hollywood’s most talked-about couples. However, their romance was far from perfect.

Reynolds, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 82 due to cardiac arrest, reflected on his relationship with Field in his memoir, But Enough About Me. According to excerpts reported by The New York Post, Reynolds expressed deep regret over how their relationship unfolded. He admitted that he wished he had put more effort into making things work between them, recognizing too late the significance of what they had.

In March of the same year, Field spoke to Variety and revealed that she had completely cut off communication with Reynolds in the final 30 years of his life. Her reasons were deeply personal.

“I couldn’t be around him at all. He really wasn’t good for me in any way,” she explained. “He convinced himself that I meant more to him than he actually believed, but that wasn’t true. He just wanted something he couldn’t have. I didn’t want to handle that situation.”

Her words painted a complex picture of their relationship—one that was intense, passionate, but ultimately unhealthy for her.

Despite the ups and downs in her personal life, Sally Field remains an icon in Hollywood. Her ability to portray deeply human and relatable characters has earned her the admiration of generations of fans. Her honesty, both in her career and personal revelations, continues to make her one of the most respected and beloved actresses of all time.

Even as she reflects on her past experiences—both joyful and painful—Sally Field remains a class act, proving once again why she is, and always will be, a Hollywood legend.
