One such tragic story is that of Buddy, a sweet, carefree dog who endured a horrific act of cruelty but, against all odds, is now on the path to a miraculous recovery thanks to a dedicated team of veterinarians and rescuers.

In April 2021, the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi shared the devastating story of Buddy. Described as a friendly and non-aggressive dog who was never a threat to anyone, Buddy was found with severe burns across his face and an extension cord tied around his neck. The image of this poor dog, his face charred black and his body wrapped in pain, sent shockwaves across animal-loving communities everywhere.

As reported by WTVA, a child eventually admitted to setting Buddy on fire. However, because the child was under the age of 12, he could not be held legally accountable for his actions. This fact only intensified public outrage, highlighting a painful gap in the legal system when it comes to protecting animals from violent acts.

Following the attack, Buddy was immediately placed under the care of the Tunica Humane Society, and his treatment began at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. From the very beginning, it was clear that his journey to recovery would be long and difficult, but his caretakers remained hopeful and committed.

Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, an associate professor and veterinary surgeon, explained the early challenges in Buddy’s treatment. “Buddy’s vital signs are good,” she said, “but as with any burn patient, this is very much the bottom of a tall mountain to be climbed.” The veterinary team provided constant care, changing his bandages regularly and monitoring him for any complications that could arise during the healing process.

Despite the severity of his injuries, there was a silver lining: Buddy did not lose his eyesight. According to the Tunica Humane Society, doctors believed his eyes were still intact. His eyelids had sustained damage and would require surgery, but the hope remained that he would regain some vision after healing.

At that time, Buddy had to wear bandages covering most of his upper body, but even through his pain, he remained a good-spirited dog. The Humane Society reported that he continued to progress every day and never failed to impress his doctors. The results of his skin grafts were promising, and while burn injuries heal slowly, Buddy was defying the odds with each passing week.

During one of his bandage changes, his caretakers noted significant improvement in the appearance of his face. Not only was he healing physically, but he was also beginning to learn basic commands—a clear sign that his spirit had not been broken by the cruelty he experienced.

“This sweet, friendly dog didn’t deserve what happened to him,” the Tunica Humane Society shared on Facebook. “He was never a threat to anyone. What happened was an act of cruelty that was both senseless and calculated.”

The organization expressed hope that Buddy’s suffering wouldn’t be in vain—that his story might bring about greater awareness, inspire change, and ultimately lead to justice for other animals facing similar situations.

In the months that followed, Buddy continued to receive top-quality care from the team at Mississippi State. He underwent multiple skin grafts to help with the healing process and gradually required fewer bandages. Over time, he started returning to his cheerful self. As his ears were finally freed from the wraps, his mood visibly lifted. According to a report from the Humane Society, Buddy became more active and playful—clearly feeling joy as he slowly regained a sense of normalcy.

Then came a milestone that marked a significant turning point in Buddy’s recovery. On August 7, his rescuers shared the incredible news: Buddy’s eye bandages, which had completely covered his eyes since the attack, were removed without the need for heavy sedation. For the first time in over three months, Buddy was able to see again.

“His eyes were actually open, and he was very aware,” the Humane Society wrote in an emotional update. “In answer to your thousands and thousands of prayers—YES, Buddy can still see.”

They poignantly noted that Buddy’s last visual memory had been those final horrific moments before the fire. The fact that he could now see again represented far more than just physical recovery—it was a step toward emotional healing and a return to life as a happy dog.

Sandy Williams, director of the Tunica Humane Society, remarked that Buddy’s personality had blossomed since the bandages came off. “He is happy and playful and walking the halls of the hospital with a great big ball in his mouth,” she told WREG. “He loves balls. He carries them around so everyone can see.” A video shared by the organization showed Buddy joyfully playing fetch, bringing smiles to thousands who had followed his story.

While Buddy’s recovery has been remarkable, his journey isn’t over. The Humane Society noted that his eyelids would still need surgical attention to properly protect his eyes. Additionally, due to the extent of his injuries, Buddy will require special care for the rest of his life.

According to Williams, Buddy’s skin will remain sensitive, and his eyes may need daily drops. Sun protection is also essential, as he won’t be able to spend long periods outdoors. “He is not going to be a dog that can stay out in the sun hours at a time,” she said.
